Permanent Exhibits

From Wilderness to Williamstown provides an overview of the town from the time it was used as Mahican hunting ground to the present. It explores how and why the town came to be what it is today; the forces and groups that shaped it; the ways in which it has reflected developments nationally, and the ways in which it is unique. The roles of women and minority groups are examined as well as the influence of Williams College on town development.

Wartimes: World Events that Shaped Our History
began as a collection of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of veterans of the Civil War. This collection was transferred to the American Legion Post when the last of the Civil War veterans died. The House of Local History now maintains and adds to the initial collection in consultation with the American Legion. This room examines the experiences of Williamstown residents both on the home front and in battle, in the various conflicts from the Revolution to the war in Viet Nam.

Rotating Exhibits examine particular, more limited aspects of the town’s history, or display items that are not part of a themed exhibit.
